It’s never been a better time to be a student. Technology has made it easier than ever to nail the student lifestyle.
Not sure where you left off reading your notes? There’s a tool for that.
Can’t keep track of all your assessment due dates? There’s an app for that.
Need a study partner? There’s an app for that, too.
From grammar and spelling apps, to distraction blockers, here are our favourite free web-based study and writing tools to help make your student lifestyle that little bit sweeter:
1. Grammarly
First and foremost – Grammarly. Nothing comes close to this platform. It’s spelling and grammar checker, free, accurate, works on almost any website or online tool, and picks up errors that most spell checkers miss. Get it now.
2. Hemingway App
The Hemingway App is an editor that highlights and corrects grammar, fluency, and sentence structure in order to help your writing read and look better. The difference between this and Grammarly is that Hemingway App highlights the complicated and dull words in your work by pointing out the use of adverbs and passive voice and asking you to rewrite wordy sentences, whereas Grammarly is more focused on spelling, plagiarism and grammar.
3. Trello
Our fave tool in the land of project management? Trello wins hands down. You probably don’t know it, but you’re walking around with a to list in your brain right now and it’s not really that healthy (or efficient). Throw it all into Trello, add some dates, people, links, contacts, then voila, your to do list is now somewhere else. Go on, try it.
4. Evernote
A little different from Trello, is Evernote. It’s a storage box for anything you can imagine in one place, essentially a scheduling and organising tool. Evernote integrates with just about everything. It has browser extensions that allow you to save a web page — in its entirety — in one click for future reference.
5. Piktochart
Graph making for dummies. Piktochart is a web-based infographic application that makes infographics and visuals using themed templates. You’ll love this if you’re a team leader or educator and often create charts or graphs for presentations.
6. StayFocused
Struggling to write that assessment? Can’t stay out of Facebook for more than 2 minutes? You might need a distraction blocker. StayFocusd is a free Chrome extension that lets you choose how you want to block distractions on your desktop. You can also give yourself permission to spend a set amount of time each day on distracting websites. Heck, we all need this one.
7. Marinara Timer
Great for students, this tool helps you set blocks of study time, and lets you schedule how long you want those work sessions and breaks to be. Add this tool to your distraction blocker tool and you’ve got the perfect study partners.
