Moving into a new career
Kelly‘s move from Ambulance Officer to Operations Manager at a not for profit organisation has been eye-opening. After the fast-paced world of emergency services, she now experiences a different kind of pace; managing a large team of people who vary in skill level, across multiple departments.
“To be really good at this job, I thought it would help me to have a qualification, and to get a better understanding of what I needed to be doing on a day to day basis in my management role.”
Kelly also has a Diploma of Health Science under her belt, which provided her with what she needed at the time, but was definitely a more formal way of learning. She’s enjoyed the pace and style of her Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management at Monarch Institute. “Studying online allows me to complete the course at my own pace and in my own time, and I can fit study around my work.”
Like many people in management roles, Kelly knew she needed to develop her leadership and management skills, but it was also important that she could keep enjoying the things she loves. “I’m a cyclist, and that takes time out of my weekend but I need to do it. I also need to do this course, so it’s just about making sure I’m conscious about my time and blocking out time to study”.
Kelly wasn’t convinced that going back to a traditional university style of learning would suit her at this time in her career, but she also needed the support as she knew she couldn’t do it alone. “Monarch has been really supportive. I can come in once a week and spend some time with the trainers, and it re-motivates me to get through the bits that I’m struggling with”.
“Has it helped me? Definitely. I’ve already noticed the changes. The course has enabled me to take a step back and have a broader perspective of what I’m doing, which is helped me define what I want to get out of my current role.”
